Pret's Packed Lunch

Client: Self-made brief for Pret

This campaign is a nationwide activation project for sustainability in the takeaway food industry. Similar to the reusable cup idea that has been used all over the country. The main aim of this brief was to create sustainable solutions to plastic waste.

The challenge

  • Too much plastic used in food chain packaging.

  • Hubbub surveyed 1,200 UK office workers and more than half of them said they were buying takeaway lunches more than they used to five years ago, generating an estimated 276 items of waste per person per year.

The solution

Reusable coffee cups are making an impact across the world. We are going to introduce the reusable lunchbox campaign. To start with, there will be an option, in stores that make the food fresh in their kitchens, to bring your own lunch box. In the kitchen, some food will be left in a sealed container instead of being put into plastic packaging, ready for people to collect. If this is not used by the end of the day, it can then be packaged to go to charities, shelters and food banks. From this, Pret can then introduce its own branded (sustainable) lunchboxes for people to buy and use in stores.

This campaign comes with its challenges, which I did consider whilst building my idea. Without the wrapping provided on meals, the allergy information would not be included, which would become an issue and potentially a lawsuit. To problem solve this,I designed some business cards which would contain all of the ingredients and allergen information alongside a QR which would take you to the website with an online version of this information. These cards would be handed out to the customer as the employee boxes up their food.
